The X-29's flight is aided by a system of relaxed stability. In this system, a network of computers provides the fly-by-wire control system with a continuous stream of corrective inputs, thus maintaining stability. Without these computers, the plane would probably disintegrate in flight. In the future, military planners believe a much higher degree of agility will be necessary in fighter planes. The X-29A was designed to easily satisfy this requirement.
